Kolkata Police posted on social media platform
According to the incident, on February 24 afternoon, Inspector Prosenjit Chatterjee, who was handling the traffic management in Kidderpore area near Vidyasagar Setu, suddenly saw flames rising from an electric pole. This pillar was on the side of a busy road and with schools, shops and residential areas nearby, the situation could have been extremely dangerous. The fire was spreading rapidly and there was a danger of explosion due to short circuit in the electrical wires.
Inspector Prosenjit assessed the situation without any delay. They did not wait for the fire brigade to arrive, as time was short and the fire could have gone out of control. He immediately parked his traffic police vehicle just below the pillar, climbed onto the roof of the vehicle and tried to control the fire with a fire extinguisher in his hand.
Risking his life, he used the extinguisher several times and extinguished the fire completely. During this, the surrounding crowd applauded his courage and many people thanked him.
Kolkata Police shared the video of the incident and wrote, “While managing the traffic, he saw an electric pole engulfed in flames. Understanding the danger to the crowded area, he did not wait for the fire tender.”
Kolkata Police further wrote, “Instead, he parked his vehicle right below the pole, climbed onto the roof, and risked his life and used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire. His immediate action and courage earned him a heartfelt thank you from the locals. We salute our colleague for going above and beyond the call of duty!”
