Memories of Uttarayan 2002: When newly elected Chief Minister Narendra Modi flew a kite from the rooftop

New Delhi, January 14 (IANS). There is a tradition in the country of flying kites on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also often become a part of this tradition. Even after becoming the Chief Minister for the first time, Narendra Modi had flown a kite in the sky of Ahmedabad. On Wednesday, ‘Modi Archive’ shared that special moment of Prime Minister Modi.

The post on social media platform ‘X’ account ‘Modi Archive’ read, “The sky has never been the limit for Narendra Modi. Memories of Uttarayan 2002, a new Chief Minister (Narendra Modi) celebrating Makar Sankranti with local families on a rooftop in Ahmedabad. Under the leadership of the then Chief Minister Modi, Gujarat’s Kite Festival transformed from a local festival to a global event.”

‘Modi Archive’ has also shared a video. This 2002 video of then CM Narendra Modi celebrating the kite festival brings back old memories. Then, as the newly elected Chief Minister, Narendra Modi had come to celebrate Uttarayan with local families.

At that time a friendly kite flying competition was seen on the terrace. Narendra Modi had met the local people. Apart from this, they tasted hot Undhiyu, Jalebi with sweet syrup and special food of Uttarayan.

In one of his addresses, Narendra Modi had said, “In the kite market, its economics, business worth around Rs 100 crore has started happening in Gujarat. Poor, illiterate and disabled people also start this industry sitting at home. This money goes to the homes of the poor.”

In his address, he said that our continuous effort is to take the kite industry to Rs 500 crore. Being an International Kite Festival, I am feeling that the traditional kites made in Gujarat have come in the market with a new design, new material and a specialty as compared to the kites of the world. Due to this, kite makers have also developed a global vision.”

‘Modi Archive’ conveys its message in the video that Narendra Modi, as Chief Minister, started the International Kite Festival in 2004, turning a local tradition into a global cultural event.
