Flaws have been found in the notice of no-confidence motion submitted by opposition MPs demanding the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. According to a report, the notice mentioned events of February 2025 four times, which could have led to rejection as per the rules.
However, according to sources, the Speaker has directed the Lok Sabha Secretariat to remove the shortcomings in the notice and take further action.
Birla has ordered immediate action as per the rules. This notice will be listed after the commencement of the second phase of the budget session.
Once the revised notice is received, it will be immediately examined as per the prescribed rules. On Tuesday, Congress presented a no-confidence motion against the Lok Sabha Speaker, which was signed by 118 MPs.
According to sources, opposition MPs alleged “blatantly partisan” conduct and said leaders of opposition parties were not allowed to speak.
The no-confidence motion notice mentions four incidents against the Speaker, including the opposition’s allegation that Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was not allowed to speak in the House during the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address.
Opposition MPs also took issue with the suspension of eight MPs, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s “objectionable and personal attacks” on former prime ministers and Speaker Om Birla’s statement in which he had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House to avoid any untoward incident after receiving information that some Congress MPs were “causing an unprecedented incident” by coming to the Prime Minister’s seat.
Meanwhile, according to sources, Speaker Om Birla has decided on moral grounds that he will not attend the proceedings of the House till the disposal of the no-confidence motion against him.
According to Lok Sabha Secretariat sources, the discussion on the motion to remove the Speaker is likely to take place on March 9, the first day of the second part of the budget session.
