Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh got another term, nominated by the President

President Draupadi Murmu has nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh as Rajya Sabha member. His appointment was finalized on Thursday, after his previous term as JDU member from Bihar ended on April 9. He has been serving as the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha since 2018.

The nomination of the 69-year-old leader has been made under the powers conferred by sub-section (a) of clause (1) read with Article 3 of the Constitution of India. Harivansh has been nominated to fill the post left vacant by the retirement of nominated member Ranjan Gogoi.

Harivansh has extensive experience in Parliament, as he has served on several important committees of the Upper House. Over the years he has been a member of the Agriculture Committee, Trade Advisory Committee, Rules Committee and General Purposes Committee. He has also chaired important committees such as the Parliamentarian Local Area Development Planning Committee and the Privileges Committee.

His contributions extend to legislative and policy forums, including his role in the National Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction. He has also been a member of several select and joint committees, such as the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, and has played an important role in legislative scrutiny.

Additionally, he has served on several consultation and advisory bodies including the Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Chairman of the Content Advisory Committee of Rajya Sabha Television. His parliamentary journey began with his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2014, followed by his re-election in 2020.

Harivansh had served as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and had overseen important proceedings of the House as Deputy Chairman during the last budget session.

His term ended on 9 April, after which fresh nominations were issued to fill the vacant seat.
