New Delhi, July 24 (IANS). Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) president Sonia Gandhi on Friday criticized the central government’s handling of students’ protests over the leak of exam papers and alleged that the education system is facing a deep crisis.
The Congress party shared an article on its X handle, in which former party president Sonia Gandhi said, “The Modi government often resorts to violence instead of dialogue. From farmers to activists, this pattern is clearly visible. The central government has not only harmed India’s education sector but has also made a habit of working without any fear, being self-righteous and being completely insensitive. The students of India have exposed the reality of the claims of the Modi government.”
In her article titled “The collapse of the education system, the trauma of young India”, Sonia Gandhi wrote that student protests against the leaking of exam papers and problems in the education system have gained momentum across the country and their demands are focused on accountability and reforms.
Referring to the protests that took place in Delhi on July 20, Gandhi wrote, “Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces brutally tried to suppress them by using lathicharge and tear gas and by using unnecessary violence. These are our sons, daughters and youth.”
The Congress leader also expressed concern over government education, examination reforms and accountability practices. He alleged that declining investment in government education, increasing reliance on private institutions and problems with the examination system have put additional pressure on students and families.
On irregularities in the examination, Sonia Gandhi wrote that the testing system has been affected by centralization, privatization and politicization. He alleged that due to repeated paper leaks, students’ confidence in competitive examinations has diminished.
He also criticized the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTAA), raised questions on its accountability and alleged that reforms suggested by parliamentary committees were not properly addressed.
Sonia Gandhi said that unemployment, tough competition and limited opportunities have increased the stress of the youth. He wrote that students are trying to succeed in an increasingly difficult system without adequate help and resources.
At the end of her article, Sonia Gandhi said, “The central government has not only spoiled India’s education sector, but has also developed a habit of working with complete indifference, extreme self-obsession and extreme insensitivity.”
He said, “The students of India have recognized the reality of the central government. It is our moral, political and constitutional duty to stand with them and protect their future.”
