Tamil Nadu elections: MMK demands 5 seats from DMK, first round of talks completed

DMK treasurer and Lok Sabha MP TR. Baalu ​​on Monday held discussions with Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president MH Jawaharullah regarding seat sharing ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

After the meeting, Jawaharullah said that MMK has demanded five seats from DMK in the elections. He also stressed that his party will contest the Tamil Nadu elections under the DMK alliance.

Leaders of both the parties held an alliance meeting at DMK headquarters ‘Anna Arivalayam’.

Speaking to the media, the MMK president said, “Today we had discussions with the DMK on seat sharing. We have appealed to the MMK to allot us 5 seats in this election and this is the first phase of talks. In the upcoming assembly elections, we will contest under the banner of the DMK alliance. We will campaign for the DMK alliance in the entire Tamil Nadu… We will also discuss with Chief Minister Stalin and then there will be a second round of talks. In the upcoming elections, we will be the ‘Rising Sun’ of DMK. Will contest elections on the symbol.”

Earlier, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) president K.M. Kader Mohideen also met DMK representatives on Sunday over seat sharing ahead of the upcoming assembly elections and demanded that he be allotted five seats to contest the elections under the alliance.

Meanwhile, DMK’s seat-sharing talks committee held discussions with alliance partners ahead of the upcoming elections on Sunday.

Senior leaders TR Baalu, KN Nehru, EV Velu, Tiruchi Siva, RS Bharathi and MRK Panneerselvam were present.

The committee members had met the Chief Minister at the camp office for consultations before going to the party headquarters.

Moreover, Nam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) released its full list of 234 candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections at the ‘Matrithai Virumbam Makkal Manadu’ held at Aalampatti Pudur in Tiruchirappalli on Saturday.

Party chief coordinator Seeman introduced all the candidates on the stage and announced that he would contest from Karaikudi assembly constituency.

According to the party, the list includes 117 male and 117 female candidates, ensuring equal representation of men and women in the electoral fray. Party leaders said the move reflected NTK’s commitment to gender equality in politics.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Thursday also announced five poll promises for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Elections will be held this year for 234 members of the Tamil Nadu Assembly. In the 2021 elections, the DMK led the Secular Progressive Alliance to victory by winning 133 seats, while the AIADMK won 66 seats.
