The ongoing political tension over formation of a new government in Tamil Nadu shows no signs of abating. Even three days after the election results were declared, it is still not clear who will form the new government in the state. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, TVK, made a grand entry by winning 108 seats; However, the magic figure required for majority is still out of their reach. Initially it seemed that TVK would be able to form the government with the conditional support of the Congress party. To achieve this goal, TVK chief Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar twice in three days. However, the Governor is not convinced that TVK currently has the numbers to form a government. Meanwhile, there is speculation that Dravidian rivals – DMK and AIADMK – may join hands to form government after more than 50 years of enmity. Such an alliance between DMK and AIADMK could oust Vijay from power, which would be against the election mandate. If such a situation arises, the political history of Tamil Nadu may resemble the events previously seen in Uttar Pradesh.
When SP and BSP joined hands in UP
It is important to remember that in 1993, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kanshi Ram had joined hands to stop the momentum of BJP’s victory. However, the infamous ‘Guest House incident’ of 1995 created such deep bitterness that the two parties remained enemies for two decades. Later, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the ‘bua-babua’ (aunt-nephew) duo – Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav – came together again; However, when the election results did not meet expectations, Mayawati broke the alliance. Now, ahead of the upcoming 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, many new political equations are constantly changing and taking new forms.
DMK and AIADMK: Rivals in Tamil Nadu for 50 years
Talking about Tamil Nadu, DMK and AIADMK have been rivals for more than 50 years. These two pillars of Dravidian politics, both parties have ruled the state for decades and have been constantly opposing each other. However, in recent elections, the arrival of Vijaya’s party – TVK – has weakened both the old parties. Now there is a possibility that these two parties can form the government together.
AIADMK General Secretary’s announcement: “We will form the next government”
Amidst the uncertainty regarding the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has given an important statement. He has assured his MLAs that ultimately AIADMK will form the next government in the state. This time, no party has got absolute majority in Tamil Nadu. Actor-politician Vijay’s party, ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK), has won 108 seats; However, it still needs at least 10 more MLAs to form the government. Due to lack of required majority, the Governor has not invited Vijay to form the government. In this backdrop, Palaniswami’s statement has given rise to speculation that new political equations are being formed in Tamil Nadu. Currently, the AIADMK has accommodated its MLAs in a luxurious resort in the neighboring Union Territory of Puducherry.
28 AIADMK MLAs are staying in a resort in Puducherry.
According to party sources, Palaniswami met party MLAs at the resort late on Thursday night and discussed in detail the rapidly changing political situation in Tamil Nadu. According to reports, during this meeting he was elected the leader of the AIADMK legislature party. The MLAs submitted signed letters in support of his leadership. Sources further said Palaniswami tried to instill confidence in the MLAs and urged them to “wait patiently”. Along with this, Palaniswami reiterated his point that AIADMK will ultimately form the government in Tamil Nadu.
