Chennai, May 27 (IANS). Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Aadhav Arjun provided financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to chess player Vaishali to participate in international chess tournaments.
Public Works and Sports Minister Aadhav Arjun handed over a check of Rs 10 lakh to Tamil Nadu chess player Vaishali as financial assistance for participating in international tournaments at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, the Sports Minister said that various initiatives are being taken to help the players of Tamil Nadu win medals in international and global level competitions. Particularly talented players are being identified and need based support is being provided for their sporting needs.
Under the Champions Development Scheme (CDS), national level gold medalists below 20 years of age are selected and provided need-based assistance up to Rs 4 lakh per year. This assistance includes expenses like sports attire, sports equipment, training abroad and participation in competitions held abroad.
Additionally, under the ‘Medal Incentive for International Meets Scheme’ (MIMS), financial assistance up to Rs 12 lakh per year is provided to athletes who have the potential to win medals in international competitions. This assistance is given for purchasing sports equipment and materials, taking training abroad and participating in international competitions.
Similarly, under the ‘Elite Scheme’ meant for the best athletes, need-based assistance is provided to those athletes who have the potential to win medals in the Olympics and other international competitions. Under this scheme, every athlete is entitled to receive financial assistance of up to Rs 30 lakh every year.
In this regard, under the ‘Elite Scheme’ for outstanding players, Tamil Nadu chess player Vaishali has been provided financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh to participate in international chess tournaments. Similarly, necessary financial assistance is being immediately provided to the players of the state who have won medals at the national level and who aspire to excel in international and world-level competitions.
The event was attended by IAS Sajjan Singh R Chavan, Secretary, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, IAS J Meghnath Reddy, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority, District Revenue Officer R Suman, General Manager L Sujatha and other government officials.
