West Bengal: Governor orders departmental inquiry against RMO related to RG tax case

पश्चिम बंगाल: राज्यपाल ने आरजी कर मामले से जुड़े आरएमओ के खिलाफ विभागीय जांच के आदेश दिए

Kolkata, May 23 (IANS). West Bengal Governor RN Ravi on Saturday ordered a departmental inquiry against Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Avik De, whose name had cropped up in connection with the rape and murder of a female junior doctor at Kolkata’s government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024 and financial irregularities worth crores linked to the institution.

Dey, considered close to former RG Kar principal Sandeep Ghosh, was also arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a case of financial irregularities related to the medical college.

Recently, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had announced the reopening of files of cases related to RG tax. Three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers in the tax cases—former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and former Deputy Commissioners Abhishek Gupta and Indira Mukherjee—were suspended over alleged lapses in the initial investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police before the investigation was handed over to the CBI following a Calcutta High Court order.

The Chief Minister officer also clarified that the new investigation in the RG tax case will continue parallel to the existing investigation by the CBI.

After the state administration reopened the RG tax case files, the Governor on Saturday ordered a departmental inquiry against Dr Avik Dey.

Incidentally, as per the Chief Minister’s announcement, departmental action is also being taken against the three suspended IPS officers.

It is learned that several allegations have emerged against Dr Dey, including allegedly creating an atmosphere of intimidation in various medical institutions in the state through his close associates and illegally obtaining postgraduate training under the service quota.

Dey is currently working as a radiologist at Burdwan Medical College in East Burdwan district.

During the RG tax controversy, his name had cropped up in allegations of allegedly maintaining an intimidating environment in various medical colleges across the state.

He was also accused of reaching the scene of the RG Kar rape and murder case, even though he had no official role there. Questions were raised over the timing and reasons for his presence at the scene in the early hours after the victim’s body was found.
