During this meeting, the opposition faction reiterated the demand to remove Raja Waring from the post of state president. Venugopal strongly reprimanded the leaders for making blatant statements and publicly exposing the party’s internal strife.
Punjab Congress: The Congress party had called a meeting on Wednesday evening to decide the strategy for the 2027 assembly elections in Punjab. This meeting was presided over by Congress Organization General Secretary KC Venugopal. During this, a heated argument was witnessed between senior leaders of Punjab Congress. This meeting held at the Congress headquarters ended inconclusively without any consensus or outcome. In this meeting, senior leaders like Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, State Congress President (Punjab) Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Rana Gurjit Singh were present. After the meeting, any leader avoided talking openly to the media.
According to sources, the internal factionalism in the meeting reached its peak when former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi openly issued a warning. Channi said that if Raja Waring continues on the post of state president, he is ready to resign from the post of election campaign committee chairman. On the other hand, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Rana Gurjit Singh accused the top leadership of ignoring the ground survey reports. In the meeting, the leaders of the opposition group made it clear that they are not in favor of going to the elections under the leadership of Warringah.
During this meeting, the opposition faction reiterated the demand to remove Raja Waring from the post of state president. Venugopal strongly reprimanded the leaders for making blatant statements and publicly exposing the party’s internal strife. A senior leader directly told Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel that now it depends on you whether you lead the party to victory or defeat in the upcoming elections.
Controversy erupted after survey report
According to sources, the ruckus in the meeting started when the party’s election strategist Sunil Kanugolu presented his survey report. The report indicated that there has been a decline in the graph and support of the Congress in the Malwa region after the decision to retain Waring as the PCC president. As soon as the report came out, a heated debate broke out among the leaders. The high command attempted to bring Channi, Waring and Randhawa together and resolve their differences, but all efforts proved unsuccessful.
Leaders left the meeting midway as soon as Venugopal left
The atmosphere of the meeting was so tense that as soon as KC Venugopal came out, Channi and Randhawa also immediately left the meeting. However, Bhupesh Baghel and Raja Waring remained sitting there for a long time. After the meeting, Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel, handling the situation, said that since some prominent leaders could not attend the meeting, the meeting has been called again tomorrow i.e. Thursday to complete the strategic discussion.
