Uttarakhand News: The atmosphere of happiness turned into mourning on Sunday night in a marriage hall in Khatima of Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand, when a dispute started between the two parties regarding the amount of dowry and mehr during the marriage. Amidst the dispute the bride’s father suffered a heart attack. His family members immediately took him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

As soon as the news of the death of the bride’s father was received, the atmosphere became tense and angry people took several wedding guests including the groom hostage and beat them up. This incident took place at Khushboo Marriage Hall located in Ward No. 7, Islamnagar, where the marriage procession of the daughter of Sadiq Contractor from Bada Faridpur, Bareilly had come. Everything remained normal till the wedding procession was welcomed, but at the time of Nikah, both the parties came face to face regarding the amount of dowry.

Bride’s side alleges increasing dowry demand

The girl’s side alleges that ever since the marriage was fixed, the boy’s side kept increasing the demand for dowry. First a demand was made for a scooter, later an Apache bike and Rs 1 lakh in cash was demanded. At the same time, during the marriage, the girl’s side asked for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh, while the boy’s side remained adamant on Rs 21,000. Despite prolonged talks, no consensus could be reached.

Bride’s father suffers heart attack amid stress

Amidst this dispute, the stressed bride’s father’s health deteriorated and he suffered a heart attack. As soon as the news of his death was received in the hospital, there was anger among the family members and local people. The angry mob beat up the groom Mohammad Arif, his brother Mohammad Khalid, brother-in-law Ata Hussain and many wedding guests.

Many wedding guests jumped from the roof to save their lives.

The situation became so bad that many wedding guests had to run away by jumping from the roof of a house near the marriage hall to save their lives. During this time, a part of the roof was also damaged and some people were reported injured. During the dispute, chairs were broken in the marriage hall and an atmosphere of chaos was created.

Police took charge

As soon as the information was received, Kotwal Vijendra Shah reached the spot with the police force and took the situation under control. The police evacuated the woman, children and other wedding guests safely. Talks continued between the two sides till late night in the presence of police. Kotwal Vijendra Shah said that efforts are being made to resolve the matter. If no agreement is reached, legal action will be taken based on the complaints of both the parties. There is a tense situation in the area after the incident and police force has been deployed at the spot as a precautionary measure.
