In a major action, Dehradun Police has arrested an assistant professor of Shivalik College of Engineering in the question paper leak of even-semester examination of Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU). It is alleged that he shared important questions similar to the question paper with students through WhatsApp group before the examination, thereby breaching the confidentiality of the examination system.
According to the police, Dr. Vinay Kumar Patel, controller of examination of Veer Madhav Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technological University, had lodged a complaint at Kotwali Premnagar. The complaint stated that the university had received an e-mail regarding the even-semester examination to be held on July 8, 2026. It was alleged that on July 3, 2026, an assistant professor of Shivalik College of Engineering had shared important questions related to the examination with the students through a WhatsApp group.
The internal investigation committee constituted by the university investigated the matter. Investigation revealed that many of the questions shared on the internal portal and WhatsApp groups of students ahead of the exam largely matched the actual question paper. Based on the investigation report, the university considered this a serious violation of the confidentiality of the examination system.
On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered under sections 316, 318(4) and 61(2) of the Indian Judicial Code (BNS) at Kotwali Premnagar. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun ordered immediate investigation.
During the investigation, on the basis of statements of witnesses, documentary evidence and other evidence, the police arrested the named accused Ashish Kumar Gupta (40 years). He is working as Assistant Professor in Shivalik College of Engineering, Jhajhra and is originally a resident of Shakumbhari Vihar, Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh).
The police have taken possession of the electronic devices recovered from the accused and have started investigating them. Officials say that the role of other possible accused in the case is also being investigated and if sufficient evidence is found, action will be taken against them as per rules.
Dehradun Police said that the campaign against the networks involved in cheating in examinations and leaking of question papers will continue and the transparency and fairness of the education system will not be compromised in any way.
