New Delhi, December 7 (IANS). Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Sunday said Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) based applications can play a big role in theft detection and predictive maintenance.
Addressing participants of a two-day national conference focused on the use of AI/ML technology in the power distribution sector at Bharat Mandapam, the Union Minister said AI/ML based solutions, smart meter analytics, digital twins, predictive maintenance, theft detection intelligence, appliance-level consumer insights, automated outage forecasting and GenAI-based decision support can transform both consumer experience and operational efficiency.
Also said that both these technologies will also play an important role in building consumer-centric, self-adapted distribution networks.
Manohar Lal praised the active participation of industry, states, innovators, academia and technology partners in the national conference. Also appreciated the AI/ML measures introduced by Distribution Companies (DISCOMs), Advanced Metering Infrastructure Service Providers (AMISPs), Technology Solution Providers (TSPs) and Home Automation Solution Providers (HASPs).
The Union Minister urged all DISCOM companies to work closely with stakeholders across the eco-system to move towards smart, reliable and consumer-centric distribution systems.
There is also a need to actively involve consumers, he said. It is important to address the misinformation that sometimes occurs about new technologies and gain valuable consumer support for technology adoption in this area.
At the event, Pankaj Aggarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to strengthen digitalization in DISCOM companies and promote the adoption of AI/ML-based solutions that provide scalable operational and financial improvements. He stressed the importance of capacity building, secure data-sharing frameworks and interoperability to ensure that the innovations showcased during the conference can be implemented on a nationwide scale to facilitate the energy transition across the country.
