Can AI be fatal? OpenAI in the dock due to alleged suicide and mental trauma

New Delhi, November 8 (IANS). Some families have sued American company OpenAI. They allege that the company launched its new model GPT-4O in a hurry in the market. Families say that this model caused mental harm to their loved ones and in some cases people even committed suicide.

OpenAI released the GPT-4O model in May 2024. Later in August, the company also introduced GPT-5, according to a report by TechCrunch. But the lawsuits that are taking place are specifically regarding GPT-4O. According to reports, this model would sometimes even agree with the user’s wrong or harmful things, which made the situation more serious.

In many cases, families have said that ChatGPT increased rather than alleviated their relatives’ confusion and mental problems. Some people were even hospitalized and required mental care.

According to the report, the lawsuits also claim that OpenAI rushed security testing to beat Google’s Gemini to market. At the same time, OpenAI has not yet commented on this report. According to recent court filings, ChatGPT can sometimes lead people down a path of depression or suicidal thoughts.

According to a report, OpenAI itself said that every week more than one million people talk about topics like suicide in ChatGPT.

Recently, OpenAI said that it has worked with more than 170 mental health experts so that ChatGPT can better respond to such cases, understand people’s emotions and guide them towards the right help.

The company says that in the upcoming models, it will make the security testing more stringent and accurate than before, so that such risks can be reduced.
