New Delhi, January 25 (IANS). A lawsuit has been filed against Meta Company in America, claiming that WhatsApp’s privacy claims are not true. The lawsuit states that Meta and WhatsApp store users’ private chats, analyze them and can even view them if needed.
However, Meta has completely rejected these allegations and said that this case is completely baseless and fabricated.
This lawsuit has been filed in the San Francisco District Court of America. The people involved in this allege that Meta and its top officials have cheated billions of WhatsApp users around the world.
People from Australia, Brazil, India, Mexico and South Africa are also involved in this case. All of them want the court to accept this case as a class-action case, so that all affected users can be heard together.
It has also been alleged in the lawsuit that Meta keeps the complete data of users’ chats and some employees of the company can also access these messages.
Responding to these allegations, Meta said that this lawsuit is completely baseless and the company will also take legal action against it.
A Meta spokesperson said that saying that WhatsApp messages are not secure is completely wrong and absurd. He told that ‘end-to-end encryption’ has been present in WhatsApp for the last ten years, which is based on Signal protocol. This means that no one except the sender and the recipient can read the message.
WhatsApp was started in 2009 by John Koum and Brian Acton living in America. Later in 2014, Facebook (now Meta) bought WhatsApp for $19 billion.
In 2014, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that purchasing WhatsApp was a decision related to the company’s Internet.org vision.
WhatsApp is known for its end-to-end security. This app was first launched for iOS in November 2009 and was also made available for Android users in 2010.
In just about 4 years, WhatsApp had crossed the figure of 20 crore monthly users. Today WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly active users worldwide, of which more than 100 million are in the US.
WhatsApp is considered to be the world’s most popular mobile messaging app.
