New Delhi, October 21 (IANS). Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said that about 6.7 crore citizens are buying fuel at fuel stations every day, which shows the rapidly growing economic potential of the country.

Regarding India’s strong growth, Puri said that the country has become the fourth largest economy in the world with an economy of $ 4.3 trillion and the growth rate in the first quarter of the financial year 2025-26 was 7.8 percent.

“India currently consumes about 5.5 million barrels of oil per day, reflecting the scale of its growing energy needs,” Puri wrote on social media platform X.

The Union Minister said that India’s gas pipeline network is currently 24,500 km long and is being expanded to 33,000 km by 2030 to ensure wider energy access.

He also informed that under the Ujjwala scheme, more than 10.60 crore houses have been given LPG connections, while 1.55 crore houses have been connected to Piped Natural Gas (PNG).

The Union Minister said, “There are now around 8,300 CNG stations in the country which cater to the needs of lakhs of vehicles daily.”

Emphasizing India’s efforts towards clean and sustainable energy, Puri said 114 CBG plants are operational, and green hydrogen and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) projects are being rapidly expanded.

Puri further said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s energy sector is accelerating the country’s progress towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

Earlier, Puri had said that the government has opened up 99 percent of the country’s offshore areas for oil and gas exploration and increased the crude oil import basket to more than 40 countries from the earlier 27 countries.
