Ever since Reliance Jio came into the market, it has been achieving new heights one after the other. According to data published by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio has overtaken Airtel in the wireline subscriber market share. Jio is already ahead in the wireless category. But in the wireline category till January 2022, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) was at the top, followed by Airtel at number two and Reliance Jio in third.
But now this has changed. Airtel has slipped to the third spot, and Jio claimed the second spot in February 2022. BSNL is still comfortably at number one position.
Jio aggressively adding new wireline users
Reliance Jio is aggressively adding new wireline users. In the month of February 2022, Jio added 2.4 lakh new wireline users. In comparison, Airtel and Vodafone Idea added 91 thousand and 24 thousand new wireline subscribers. BSNL and MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited), both state-run telecom companies, lost wireline users.
In January 2022, the market share of BSNL’s wireline users was 31.50%. At the same time, Reliance Jio and Airtel had 23.30% and 23.44% market share in the same category. But in February 2022, the figures changed to 30.90% for BSNL and 24% for Reliance Jio, followed by 23.52% for Airtel.

The speed at which Reliance Jio is adding new wireline users will not take long to overtake BSNL in 2022. BSNL does not have the cash flow to raise the capex level to compete with the private telcos. ,
This is a good sign for Vodafone Idea that it has added new wireline users. Vodafone Idea has a broadband arm called U Broadband which provides internet connection as well as wireline landline connection to the users. Jio is definitely benefiting from the popularity of JioFiber brand across India.
