China has once again breached India’s security. This time the matter is related to the power grids of India. According to a report by Recorded Future Inc., Chinese hackers have been targeting India’s power sector for the past few months (August-March). According to the report, hackers have targeted at least seven load dispatch centers in northern India. This is part of the cyber espionage campaign of these hackers. These hackers also get a lot of support from the Chinese government.
These power grids are present near the India-China border
According to the report, these seven load dispatch centers carry out real-time operation and power delivery for grid control in areas around the disputed India-China border in Ladakh. One of these load dispatch centers has already been targeted by a hacking group named RedEcho. According to the report, long-term targeting of Indian power grids gives groups affiliated with the Chinese government a lot of opportunity to gather economic and traditional intelligence.
Indian National Emergency Response System also breached
Recorded Future said in the report that by targeting the grids, the Chinese government wants to make it easier to access information about India’s essential infrastructure on the border. This will help him decide his future strategy. The report also said that the hackers also breached the security of the Indian National Emergency Response System and a subsidiary of a multinational logistics company.
PLA also used this hacking software
The name of the person associated with this hacking is TAG-38. It uses the viral S software – ShadowPad. This is the same software that China’s PLA and Ministry of State Security used to use earlier. No statement has been issued by China in this whole matter yet. At the same time, no response has been given from India till now.
