Government is considering starting a pilot project of AI Data Trust in IIT Hyderabad: Ashwini Vaishnav

New Delhi, July 11 (IANS). The central government is considering starting a pilot project of a sector-specific AI Data Trust at IIT Hyderabad to strengthen India’s capacity in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It aims to make high quality Indian data sets available for AI development in a safe and responsible manner. Railway Minister, Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave this information during a conversation with industry representatives in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Ashwini Vaishnav said that industry representatives had suggested that data trusts be established in Indian educational institutions, so that reliable and quality Indian data can be made available for AI development.

Welcoming this suggestion, he said that the government can start it as a pilot project in IIT Hyderabad with the cooperation of the industry.

Under the proposed system, Indian data sets related to different sectors will be stored securely. There will be clear rules and policies for the use of these data sets.

These data sets will then be made available to startups, researchers and companies developing AI-based technology, so that they can develop AI models and applications tailored to Indian needs. Necessary security measures will also be implemented to ensure safe and responsible use of data.

The Union Minister said that it is very important to increase the availability of reliable domestic data with India. This will enable AI models developed in the country to become more accurate, tailored to local needs and globally competitive.

He said such initiatives will strengthen India’s AI ecosystem and play an important role in the development of indigenous AI technologies.

The Minister said that India’s electronics manufacturing sector is growing rapidly and its production has crossed the Rs 13 lakh crore mark.

He said that electronics has now become India’s third largest export sector, while mobile phones have become the country’s largest single export product. This shows that India is strengthening its identity as a reliable manufacturing and technology hub globally.

It is noteworthy that last month Ashwini Vaishnav had inaugurated the new state-of-the-art production unit of global manufacturing company Jabil in Maharashtra. During this, he had said that this high-tech plant will manufacture the necessary equipment for AI data center and will play an important role in carrying forward the ‘Make in India, Make for the World’ vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
