India leads in use of ChatGPT in coding and data analysis: OpenAI

New Delhi, February 20 (IANS). US giant OpenAI said on Friday that India is far ahead of the global average in the use of ChatGPT for technical work. The usage of data analytics in India is almost four times higher than the global average, while the usage of codecs for coding is almost three times higher.

According to the company, Indian users ask almost three times more coding-related questions and almost twice as many questions related to education and learning as the global average.

The level of work-related utilization in India is also higher than the global average. About 35 percent of usage in India is work-related, while globally it is about 30 percent.

People in offices are mainly using AI for drafting and editing, technical support, debugging and increasing the speed of work.

At the same time, outside the office, about 35 percent of the messages are related to practical guidance, while about 20-20 percent of the messages are related to general information and writing tasks. This makes it clear that the use of AI for learning, decision making and increasing personal productivity is increasing rapidly.

Ronny Chatterjee, Chief Economist, OpenAI, said, “The pace of AI adoption is so fast that even measuring it has become a challenge. ‘Signals’ is our attempt to base the discussion on real data, so that the debate on AI in India is based on facts, and not just hype.”

According to the company, the use of AI is more concentrated in the youth segment. 18 to 24 year olds send about half of all messages, while 18 to 34 year olds account for about 80 percent of consumer messages.

These trends indicate that India is witnessing large-scale adoption of AI as well as its advanced and intelligent uses, especially in areas like coding and data analysis.

The release further said that geographically speaking, the highest utilization of coding capabilities is taking place in India’s major technology hubs. Telangana ranks first, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The number of weekly active users of ChatGPT in India has crossed 10 crore (100 million). This makes India the largest market for ChatGPT outside the US and also the fastest growing market for Codex.
