New Delhi, October 31 (IANS). Union Minister of State for Steel Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma said on Friday that India aims to achieve 300 million tonne crude steel production capacity by 2030.
The Union Minister highlighted India’s growing steel sector under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a meeting in the national capital with Sweden’s Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, State Secretary Sara Modig, in the presence of Swedish Ambassador to India Jan Thesleff and other officials.
According to the Steel Ministry, India’s domestic steel demand is growing at an impressive rate of 11-13 per cent due to large-scale infrastructure projects, while global demand remains weak.
In this meeting, discussions were held to explore opportunities for cooperation in the field of research and development in green steel production and other advanced technologies to reduce carbon emissions.
The Union Minister reaffirmed the invitation extended to Sweden to participate in Bharat Steel 2026. It is an international-cum-exhibition dedicated to the steel industry to be organized on 16-17 April, 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
According to the data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the growth rate of eight major industries of India in September this year was 3 percent as compared to the same month last year. During this period, the steel and cement sectors performed the best.
Data released by the ministry said that due to increasing demand from large infrastructure projects run by the government, there has been a strong growth of 14.1 percent in steel production in September compared to the same month last year. The cumulative growth of steel during April to September 2025-26 was 11 percent higher than the same period last year.
