New Delhi, June 5 (IANS). Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday that India’s development journey is moving forward at full speed. Referring to the strong performance of the country’s passenger vehicle market, he said that this sector has recorded tremendous growth in May 2026.

He said that major automobile manufacturers – Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra – have played an important role in this growth.
Piyush Goyal said, “India’s growth momentum is in full swing. The country’s passenger vehicle market recorded sales of about 4.4 lakh units in May 2026, registering a growth of 23 per cent year-on-year. This growth is led by Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors and Mahindra Auto and reflects strong consumer demand despite global uncertainties.”
He said the growing demand for vehicles made in India reflects growing consumer confidence in the domestic manufacturing sector and the country’s strong automobile ecosystem.
“The strong demand for Make in India vehicles reflects the growing consumer confidence, thriving manufacturing ecosystem and the transformative impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision,” the minister said.
Piyush Goyal also linked this progress in the automobile sector to the broader economic transformation going on in the country. He said that the ‘Make in India’ initiative has played an important role in promoting manufacturing and industrial production.
He said that this momentum of the automobile sector reflects the innovation, entrepreneurship and aspirations of 140 crore Indians, which is contributing to achieving the goal of a developed India.
“The journey of developed India is being driven by innovation, entrepreneurship and the aspirations of 140 crore Indians,” the minister said.
Earlier this month, the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India had recorded the highest ever monthly sales in the domestic market in May.
The company shipped 1,90,337 passenger vehicles to dealers in May. According to industry estimates, this is an increase of 39.99 percent compared to the previous year.
With this, the company also surpassed its previous record of 1,87,704 units set in April.
