New Delhi, 11 September (IANS). India’s renewable energy capacity has increased to 251.5 gW, which is more than half of the country’s renewable energy target 500 GW by 2030. This information was given on Thursday by Union New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi.
Joshi said that India is moving strongly towards the construction of a full indigenous solar value chain with the target of indigenous solar cell manufacturing by 2028.
In the ‘State Review Meeting on Renewable Energy’ organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the Union Minister said that the country is now moving beyond the module and developing domestic potential for wafers and ingots, which can ensure that the entire soral manufacturing ecosystem is established within the country.
The Union Minister said that the move will not only reduce dependence on imports, but will also promote employment, investment and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in clean energy manufacturing.
He appreciated the efforts of the states in furthering the renewable energy initiative and said that these contributions are strengthening India’s position as a global leader in the region.
Joshi described these achievements as evidence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership, which has changed India’s clean energy development and domestic manufacturing in the renewable energy (RE) region and is moving rapidly towards developed India.
The Union Minister said that about 20 lakh families have already benefited under the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Free Power Scheme.
He urged the states and discoms to ensure strict quality compliance, finalize agreements without delay and provide the best possible tariff credit to consumers.
Regarding the PM-Kusum scheme, he said that after the initial hesitant, now with the demand for additional allocation from the Chief Ministers, the scheme has gained vigor in the states. He announced that the second phase of PM-Kusum would be started in March 2026 after the current phase ends.
The Union Minister said that India has also achieved the target of 50 percent established power generation from non-Givash fuel sources five years before the scheduled time.
