Is the government really giving free laptops? The whole truth of the viral message on WhatsApp came out

Currently, a message is going viral on WhatsApp, in which it is being claimed that the Government of India is distributing free laptops to students under the “National Student Laptop Scheme 2026”. But, the reality is completely different. The government’s fact-checking agency, Press Information Bureau (PIB Fact Check) has clarified that no such government scheme exists and the claim is completely false.

What is said in the viral message?
In this viral message, students have been asked to apply through a special link. It states that upon registering they will get a free laptop. Users are also asked for their name, mobile number and in many cases bank related information. This message has been designed in such a way that it looks exactly like any government scheme, which makes it easy for people to fall into this deception.

How does this scam work?
This scam is done very cleverly. As soon as a user clicks on the link, he is redirected to a fake website, which looks exactly like a government portal. Here, users are asked to fill in their personal information. In some cases, money is demanded in the name of “processing fee”, or users are asked to share their one-time passwords (OTP). Once the user provides this information, scammers can misuse his or her bank account or identity information. Its main objective is simple: to steal your personal information and commit fraud.

What warning has been given by the authorities?
The Press Information Bureau has clearly declared such messages as completely fake. Warning people, the agency has advised them not to click on any unknown links and not to forward such messages without knowing their authenticity. These messages are created only for the purpose of collecting data from people.

How can you stay safe?
Before trusting any such offer, always check its authenticity. Get information about government schemes only from government websites or trusted sources. Never share your personal information, bank information or OTP through unknown links. If you receive such a message, delete it immediately; You can also report it to PIB Fact Check to help others avoid falling into this trap.
