Is this message real or fraud? Easy ways to identify messages received on Republic Day 2026

Around Republic Day, people start receiving many messages on their mobile phones in the name of congratulatory messages, offers, government notices and bank alerts. However, during this period, cyber fraudsters also become more active. Keeping this in mind, HDFC Bank has recently sent an email to its customers warning them to beware of APK fraud. Let’s learn more about it:

What is APK fraud?
APK means Android Package Kit. This is the file that is used to install apps on Android phones. In this fraud, fraudsters send fake links in the name of banks, government departments or popular apps. The message may read:

‘Your account will be blocked’
‘E-challan is pending’
Or ‘Claim your Republic Day offer’.
As soon as the user clicks on the link, he is asked to download an APK file. This app is installed from outside the Google Play Store and contains hidden malware.

What harm can occur from APK fraud?
If a user unknowingly installs this fake app,

The fraudster can take complete control of the phone
Bank password, ATM/card details can be stolen
The OTP can automatically reach the fraudster, and
Money can be withdrawn from the bank account.
In many cases, the user loses access to his own phone. Therefore, always install banking apps only from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Do not click on any link received through SMS, WhatsApp or email without verifying.

How to identify real and fake messages?
HDFC Bank has given some important safety tips to its customers. For example:

Always check app permissions
Be careful if an app asks for access to SMS, call logs or contacts.

Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Use OTP, biometrics and secure login.

Remember, on Republic Day 2026, both patriotism and digital vigilance are important. No bank or government institution will ever ask you to download an APK file. If a message conveys a feeling of fear or haste, then understand that it could be a fraud.
