Kaleshwaram Dam will be renovated scientifically: Telangana Minister

Hyderabad, April 17 (IANS). Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy on Friday said the state government will carry out the repair and renovation work of three dams under the Kaleshwaram project in a scientific and transparent manner.

He met National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) Chairman Anil Jain in Delhi on Friday and discussed the state government’s action plan for repair and renovation of Medigadda, Annaram and Sundila dams.

The minister explained in detail the precautionary measures being taken by the government to prevent repetition of past mistakes.

According to the official release, the NDSA Chairman expressed satisfaction over the manner in which the extensive testing is being conducted under the supervision of experts. He said he would personally visit the barrages soon.

As part of the barrage renovation process, the government has appointed expert agencies. Special agencies have started their work for design and testing.

Central Water and Power Research Center (CWPRS) is carrying out the necessary preliminary testing and studies before the design stage.

To facilitate repair of dams, various technologies including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scanning, drone surveys, borehole drilling and geotechnical and geophysical testing are being used to assess soil conditions and structural integrity of the structures.

Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the government has constituted a Central Coordination Committee to ensure coordination between various organizations. This committee includes officials from the Irrigation Department, representatives from CWPRS, representatives from the design firms and members from other technical agencies.

The Committee is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that trials are conducted expeditiously, necessary data is made available on time and effective coordination is maintained with all participating agencies.

The government is also taking steps to ensure that the entire process is carried out under the supervision of experts at the central level and strictly following the technical standards. If necessary, there is also a possibility of including a special technical expert team in this committee.

After receiving the results of all tests and comprehensive analysis of the data, the design firm will identify existing structural defects and prepare new designs for the restoration work.
