Labor reforms will increase social security of gig workers: Digital platforms

New Delhi, November 22 (IANS). Digital platforms on Saturday welcomed the decision to implement the new labor code in the country, saying that these reforms will strengthen social safeguards for gig and platform workers. Additionally, a more clear and supportive regulatory framework will be created for the sector.

Zomato’s parent company Eternal Limited said that the new rules will help in increasing social security access for gig workers associated with the company’s food delivery and quick-commerce operations.

Eternal says the company does not believe the financial impact of the regulations, particularly the Code on Social Security, will harm the long-term stability of the company’s business.

The company says that the financial and operational details will be clear only after the government issues a notification regarding the relevant rules.

According to the company, the regulations with the label laws become clearer and more uniform than ever before, which supports both India and the country’s ecosystem.

Eternal said the company has been in talks with the government for several years and is preparing for such contributions.

According to the company, “At Eternal, we are fully committed to the well-being of our gig workers. We already provide a number of benefits to our workers, such as insurance and welfare benefits, free of cost.”

On the other hand, Amazon said that the company supports the objective behind these reforms of the government. Amazon said Code on Social Security is linked to the company’s focus on employee safety and well-being.

According to the Centre, the Social Security Code, 2020 brings together nine existing social security acts into one framework, thereby ensuring universal social security for organized, unorganized, gig and platform workers.

This is the first time that gig and platform workers are being recognized and a social security fund has been set up for their welfare.
