Maruti Suzuki makes record of delivery of 30 lakh vehicles through railways

New Delhi, May 13 (IANS). India’s largest passenger vehicle maker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Wednesday said it has achieved a significant milestone by delivering more than 30 lakh vehicles through the Indian Railways network, underscoring its efforts towards greener and more sustainable logistics operations.

The company said it has continuously increased the share of rail transport in its total outbound logistics over the past decade.

The share of rail-based transport in the total vehicle dispatch was only 5 percent in the financial year 2014-15, which has now increased to 26.5 percent in the financial year 2025-26.

Maruti Suzuki said that the journey of transportation of a total of 20 lakh to 30 lakh vehicles by rail was completed in just 21 months, which is the fastest increase of 10 lakh additional vehicles through railways in the company’s history.

Commenting on the achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi said the achievement marks an important step in the company’s green logistics journey.

He said rail-based freight traffic has grown almost nine-fold since 2014 and now accounts for more than a quarter of the company’s total vehicle traffic.

He informed that the company has committed to invest more than Rs 13,720 million for dedicated green logistics infrastructure.

Takeuchi also praised the government’s PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan. He said the scheme has created a strong framework for integrated and multimodal logistics, which has helped industries adopt rail-based freight transportation.

Talking about further plans, he said that the company wants to increase the share of rail-based vehicle dispatch to 35 percent by the financial year 2030-31.

Additionally, the company will also set up an in-plant railway siding at its upcoming Kharkhoda manufacturing facility. The company says that this will reduce carbon emissions, save fuel and also reduce traffic pressure on the roads.

Maruti Suzuki said it is the first and only passenger vehicle manufacturer in India to have railway siding facilities at two of its manufacturing plants (Hansalpur in Gujarat and Manesar in Haryana).

Both these facilities have been developed under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

According to the company, these two in-plant railway sidings have a combined annual dispatch capacity of 7.5 lakh vehicles.

At present, the company’s rail network is providing services to more than 600 cities of the country through 22 hubs under the hub-and-spoke logistics model.
