OpenAI, Google and Perplexity launch free AI tools to increase users in India

Demand for AI talent is increasing rapidly in India, employers are mentioning AI skills in job descriptions: Report

New Delhi, December 19 (IANS). OpenAI, Google and Perplexity have started making their premium Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools available for free in India, significantly increasing competition in India, one of the fastest growing digital markets in the world.

The aim of this move is to rapidly increase the number of its users in India, because mobile data is cheap here and the number of smartphone users is very high.

India has approximately 73 crore smartphone users and has the cheapest mobile data rates in the world. People use about 21 gigabytes of data every month and pay only 9.2 cents per gigabyte. This makes the use of AI tools cheaper here than in many other countries.

OpenAI has made its ChatGPIT Go plan free for one year in India. This plan allows more usage than simple ChatGPT. Earlier this plan was priced at $54 in India. Due to this free offer the number of users has increased rapidly.

According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, ChatGate’s daily active users in India have reached 73 million, an increase of 607 percent over last year. This number is more than double the daily users of America. India has now become the largest market in terms of daily users.

Perplexity also made its Pro plan, which costs $200 annually globally, free for Airtel customers for a year. With this plan, the share of Indians in the number of daily active users of Perplexity worldwide has now increased to about 33 percent, which was only 7 percent last year.

User engagement data shows that ChatGPT is most popular in India. About 46 percent of monthly users opened the app daily in November, compared to 20 percent for Perplexity and 14 percent for Gemini.
