New Delhi, July 6 (IANS). According to data released by the Steel Ministry on Monday, the country’s finished steel production increased to 13.8 million tonnes (13.8 million tonnes) in June 2026, 6 percent more than 13 million tonnes (13 million tonnes) in June last year.
A good growth in finished steel production was also recorded during the first quarter (April-June) of the current financial year 2026-27. Production during this period increased from 38.7 million tonnes to 41 million tonnes, showing a growth of 5.9 percent.
A significant increase was also seen in the consumption of finished steel. Its consumption in June 2026 stood at 14.2 million tonnes (14.2 million tonnes), whereas in the same month last year it was 13.2 million tonnes (13.2 million tonnes). That means it increased by 7.2 percent on annual basis. Demand for steel remains strong due to the government’s investment in large infrastructure projects such as national highways, railways and ports.
Total consumption of finished steel increased from 38.4 million tonnes to 41.6 million tonnes during the April-June quarter. In this way, an increase of 8.3 percent was recorded in its consumption in the first quarter, which reflects the pace of ongoing large-scale infrastructure development works in the country.
There was also a sharp rise in India’s steel exports. The country exported 6.16 lakh tonnes of steel in June 2026, whereas in June last year this figure was 4.46 lakh tonnes. In this way, an increase of 38.1 percent was recorded in steel exports.
At the same time, the production of crude steel was 1.41 crore tonnes in June 2026, whereas it was 1.35 crore tonnes in the same month last year.
In terms of value also, a significant increase was recorded in steel exports. The value of steel exports in June 2026 stood at Rs 4,674 crore, whereas in June last year it was Rs 3,256.9 crore, i.e. an increase of 43.5 percent in the export value.
According to the official statement, India’s total crude steel production capacity has increased to 221.9 million tonnes per annum by June 2026. With this, the country is continuously moving towards the target of achieving a production capacity of 300 million tonnes per year by the year 2030 under the National Steel Policy.
