Toronto/New Delhi, May 26 (IANS). Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal addressed the inaugural Ministerial Plenary Session titled ‘From Political Rebalancing to Commercial Outcomes’ in Toronto, Canada on Tuesday.
Addressing the event in the presence of Canada’s International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu, Piyush Goyal talked about India’s continuous efforts to ease business and create an investor-friendly environment. He invited Canadian business and industrial leaders to become active partners in India’s growth story.
Goyal said, he emphasized how the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will act as an important catalyst in enhancing trade and investment ties, as well as open new avenues of cooperation in different sectors.
The Union Commerce Minister further said that he is confident that the next chapter of India-Canada economic partnership will move forward with confidence, which will enhance the prosperity of our countries.
Following high-level trade talks in Ottawa, Goyal led the Indian business delegation to a mega program of industry roundtables and B2B meetings in Toronto, the government said on Tuesday, with the aim of translating ministerial commitments into concrete commercial partnerships in priority sectors.
The visit builds on the work decided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and PM Mark Carney during the Canadian PM’s visit to New Delhi in March 2026. It also calls for continued high-level engagement between the two countries from mid-2025.
Currently the trade between the two countries is around $8.5 billion, both the governments have set a big common target of increasing it to $50 billion by 2030.
According to information shared by the Commerce Ministry, Goyal is leading the largest ever Indian business delegation to Canada. This delegation includes industrial leaders from more than 100 companies. This is a major step towards fully repairing the India-Canada economic relationship.
The ministry further said that the purpose of the three-day visit to Canada is to advance bilateral trade and economic relations between India and Canada, with a special focus on accelerating the ongoing negotiations for the India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
