Self-reliant India: Government signs contract worth Rs 425 crore for 1.25 MW marine gas turbine generator

New Delhi, June 19 (IANS). Government signed contract with Bharat Forge Limited for procurement of 12 Marine Gas Turbine Generator sets of 1.25 MW each for the Navy at a total cost of approximately Rs 425 crore. This information was given by the Defense Ministry on Friday.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the contract was signed under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category in the presence of Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Minimum 60 percent indigenous material has been used in these generators.

This project further strengthens the Government’s commitment towards Self-reliant India and Make-in-India under a strong domestic manufacturing system. This will enhance self-reliance in the maritime domain in critical strategic technologies and strengthen the operational readiness of the Indian Navy through indigenous production and end-to-end life cycle support.

The ministry further said that this contract is an important step towards establishing indigenous capability in manufacturing of marine gas turbine generators. This generator set is the basis of modern naval warships and is used in power generation applications powering critical combat systems, advanced weapons and sensors.

The government is continuously emphasizing on domestic production of defense equipment to promote ‘Make in India’.

Earlier this week, the central government announced that the country’s annual defense output rose to a record Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the last financial year.

This is 15.6 percent more than the production of Rs 1.54 lakh crore in FY25. Also, this is 110 percent more than the FY21 figure of Rs 84,643 crore.

According to the Defense Ministry, domestic defense production in FY14 was Rs 43,746 crore, which has now increased almost four times.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh credited the inspirational leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking India’s defense production to new heights.
