Semiconductor will play the role of 'charkha' in the coming times, will be a symbol of self-reliance: Jyotiraditya Scindia

New Delhi, October 8 (IANS). Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Wednesday compared semiconductors to ‘spinning wheels’ and said it will be a symbol of India’s self-reliance in the modern era.

Speaking at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025, Scindia said semiconductors today represent the same spirit of swadeshi and self-reliance as the charkha did during India’s freedom struggle.

“India is hosting a Startup World Cup where 500 companies will compete for funding. The country is witnessing a DSS revolution, which means designing in India, solving for India and scaling from India,” Scindia said.

He noted India’s rapid progress in the digital and telecom sectors and said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country is witnessing a new technology revolution driven by the 4D system – Democracy, Demography, Digital-First Approach and Delivery.

He said that under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, semiconductor production in India has already reached Rs 91,000 crore, which is a major achievement in the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign of the government.

The Union Minister further said, “India’s ambitions extend beyond 5G, and the India 6G Alliance is expected to contribute 10 per cent to global patents.”

Scindia said India’s telecom and digital growth is setting an example globally, where 5G connectivity is now available in 99.9 percent of the districts in the country and data prices are the lowest in the world at just Rs 9.11 per GB.

Scindia further said, “Today, India has 1.2 billion mobile subscribers, which is 20 percent of the world’s mobile population. The country has grown from 6 crore broadband users to 944 million internet subscribers.”
