New Delhi, June 19 (IANS). Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Friday said the global semiconductor industry is facing a shortage of about 10 lakh professionals. He said that this is a big opportunity for India and the country can become a major center for providing skilled human resources in this sector.
Speaking at the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) center in Patna, the Union Minister said the current size of the global semiconductor industry is around $800 billion and is likely to exceed $1 trillion within the next one year.
Ashwini Vaishnav said, “About 10 lakh new jobs are expected to be created in the global semiconductor sector by the year 2032. At the same time, the industry is also facing a shortage of about 10 lakh skilled professionals.”
He said that India needs to focus on two key areas to take advantage of this opportunity – semiconductor design and semiconductor manufacturing.
According to the minister, the government is working towards developing world-class semiconductor design capability in the country and ensuring that Indian students are among the best trained professionals in the world.
“When students graduate with semiconductor design skills, they will be considered among the best talent in the world and will immediately find opportunities in the industry,” he said.
Ashwini Vaishnav said that till now about 75 thousand students have got attractive opportunities through various programs and initiatives related to semiconductor design.
He said, “Our target is to increase this number from 75 thousand to 5 lakh students.”
The minister said that semiconductor manufacturing activities have already started in India. He said that as the production capacity increases, skill development and training programs related to construction will also be prepared.
India is actively working to promote design, manufacturing and packaging under its Semiconductor Mission Scheme and several projects across the country are currently in the implementation phase.
During the visit to the STPI centre, Ashwini Vaishnav also highlighted the government’s efforts to take the country’s startup ecosystem out of the metros.
He said that STPI centers are being continuously strengthened in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.
Additionally, the Minister interacted with young entrepreneurs, heard their experiences and discussed ways to further improve government support for startups and tech-based enterprises.
