Society is not ready for AI, changes will be different for every industry: Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic

New Delhi, February 24 (IANS). Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, said that society is not ready for the changes coming from Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on each industry will depend on the kind of work AI is doing there.

On the WTF podcast hosted by Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, Amodei said AI is rapidly moving towards achieving human capabilities and society is completely unprepared for the changes it will bring.

Comparing the current situation to a tsunami, he said that people can see it coming, but are still convincing themselves that it is not real.

During the conversation, he said, “It feels like this tsunami is coming towards us. It’s so close that we can see it, yet people are making excuses by saying, ‘Oh, it’s not really a tsunami, it’s just an illusion.'”

“The impact of AI on industries will vary depending on the nature of the tasks,” Amodei said.

She explained that human-centered roles, which require deeper reactions and emotional understanding, may take longer to make changes.

“However, tasks like coding, mathematics, and scientific research are increasingly being handled by AI systems,” Amodei said.

The discussion also touched on the evolving perceptions regarding data as the primary driver of AI progress.

“When you train in a math or coding environment, you’re not actually getting the data… it’s more artificial. You’re creating the data,” he said, adding that “dynamic data generated by the models themselves… is becoming more important.”

He further said that the share of AI models in coding work is increasing. However, automating other software engineering responsibilities will take more time.

Still, he believes full automation of such tasks could happen sooner than many expect.
