With Android 17, Google has made the process of transferring data from iPhone to Android easier than ever. Users will no longer need to download any separate app. The new migration system is built right into Android 17 and can transfer not only photos, videos, messages and contacts, but also passwords, Wi-Fi details and eSIMs. The feature has started rolling out with select Pixel devices and new Samsung foldable phones.
**No separate app required**
Google explained the new Android 17 migration experience in detail in a blog post. According to the company, the data transfer tool is now an important part of the operating system. This eliminates the need to download a separate app when switching from an iPhone to an Android phone. While the system still transfers photos, videos, contacts, messages, and calendar data as before, its capabilities have been expanded so users can easily bring their entire setup to a new phone.
**Password, Wi-Fi and e-SIM will also be transferred**
The updated migration system now supports transfer of Google account details, saved passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and e-SIM. This allows users to easily move important settings from their old iPhone to their new Android phone. According to Google, the feature has started rolling out to select Pixel smartphones. Apart from this, this feature is also available on Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8. The company said it will be extended to other Android devices in the future, although no specific timeline has been mentioned yet.
**Easy setup via QR code**
According to Google’s support page, users can choose to copy data from an iPhone or iPad when setting up their new Android phone. The Android phone then displays a QR code; Scanning it with the iPhone connects the two devices wirelessly. Users can then select the specific data they want to transfer. Google recommends keeping both devices connected until the transfer is complete, making sure the iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi, both phones are charged, and the new Android phone has plenty of storage. If the QR code is not available, switching can also be done by using a physical SIM or re-downloading an eSIM, if the carrier supports it. Once the setup is complete, users also have the option to transfer their WhatsApp chat history. Additionally, Google also provides information on switching from iMessage to Google Messages and transferring iCloud photos and videos to Google Photos.
