WhatsApp is bringing many great features. Recently, the company has introduced the username feature. Now, it is working on another feature that will eliminate the hassle of scanning QR codes to use WhatsApp on linked devices. A passkey-based linking feature is in the works, which will make the entire process faster and more secure. According to reports, this feature will first come to Android; There is no information yet about its availability for iPhone.
What is the process now for linked devices?
Currently, if you want to use WhatsApp on a laptop or desktop other than your mobile phone, you have to scan the QR code. Your account is logged in on the other device only after the scan is complete. Now, there are plans to change this process. With the new feature, users will not need to scan QR codes; Instead, they will be able to use the passkey to access WhatsApp on other devices. However, this feature will not completely remove the QR code method, but will give users an additional and convenient option.
What are the benefits of Passkey?
Let us first understand what a passkey is. Passkey verifies your identity using your phone’s built-in security features—like fingerprint scanning, face unlock, or screen lock. The passkey can be stored on the device itself or in a password manager. A major advantage is that it is very difficult for attackers to bypass the passkey, providing the best protection against hacking.
How will the new feature work?
Once the feature is available, WhatsApp will prompt a confirmation request when you try to link a device using the passkey. By simply forwarding this request your device will be linked. However, in some cases, users may also be asked to scan the QR code for additional verification, which shows that the company is not doing away with the QR code method entirely. To use this feature, users need to create a passkey for their WhatsApp account. To do this, go to the app settings and open the ‘Account’ section; There you will get the option of passkey. Once the passkey is created, you can use it to link the device.
