New Delhi, November 9 (IANS). Every year on 10 November, ‘World Science Day’ (World Science Day for Peace and Development) is celebrated all over the world. The purpose of this day is to understand the role of science in society and to show how science affects our everyday lives.
This day was started by UNESCO in the year 2001 and it was celebrated for the first time in 2002. From that time till today, every year on this day, scientific institutions, universities and organizations around the world organize science-related activities, workshops and discussions to increase interest and understanding of science among the common people.
Science is not limited to laboratories only. It is directly related to our society, environment, health and development. The main objective of World Science Day is to remind how important the role of science is for peace and sustainable development. On this day, the contribution of scientists is also honored and people are also made aware of the relevance of science.
Every year UNESCO decides a new theme for this day. Its theme for 2025 is ‘Trust, change and tomorrow: the science we need for 2050.’ This theme focuses on what kind of science we want in the coming decades, which can maintain a balance between humanity, technology and the environment.
The United Nations General Assembly has declared the decade from 2024 to 2033 as the ‘International Decade of Science for Sustainable Development’. Under this, the World Science Day of 2025 is being considered even more special, because it gives an opportunity to re-understand science and society according to the needs of the future.
Another major objective of this day is to promote scientific attitude among the people. Only when the society understands and adopts science, it will be able to stay away from superstitions and develop logical thinking. This is why World Science Day is important not only for scientists but for every citizen.
