West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit out at the BJP, saying it need not be overjoyed over the victory in the assembly. Mamata Banerjee said that without the support of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) it will not be easy for the ruling BJP at the Center to win the upcoming presidential election and will need TMC’s support.
On the walk out of BJP MLAs during the assembly session on Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee said that Presidential elections will be held soon. You (BJP) will not progress without our support. You must not forget it. Mamta Banerjee further said that the Bharatiya Janata Party does not have half the number of MLAs in the country, so it will not be easy to win the presidential election.
Referring to the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the TMC supremo said, Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party has secured 78 seats more than the previous election and BJP’s seats have come down, hence it has to get big- Don’t do big things.
Significantly, the term of President Ram Nath Kovind is ending on 24 July 2022. The President is elected indirectly through an electoral college consisting of elected members of the Rajya Sabha, the Lok Sabha and the Legislative Assemblies of the States and Union Territories. The number and value of votes of each voter in the state legislatures is worked out by a formula that takes into account the population of the state in 1971.
