Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has termed the postponement of the date of announcement of the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections as a threat to democracy. He said that democracy will not survive if governments postpone elections by putting pressure on autonomous institutions like this. Governments will come and go, political parties will also come and go, but the country should not be weak. He appealed to the Prime Minister that such incidents should be stopped.
Through a digital press conference, Arvind Kejriwal said that two days ago, the State Election Commission gives information about the announcement of the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections. But an hour before the announcement at five o’clock, a letter is written by the Central Government to the Election Commission at four o’clock. It is said in it that he is going to make the three municipal corporations of Delhi together into one corporation, so postpone the elections. The Election Commission also postpones the election announcement dates at the behest of the central government. Perhaps it must have happened for the first time in the history of the country that a letter has been written directly to the Election Commission of a state, asking to postpone the election.
Kejriwal said that many things are going on in the minds of the people due to postponement of the election date. First, the BJP is in power at the Center for 7-8 years. If all the three MCDs had to be done together then why not in eight years. An hour before the announcement of the election date, I remembered that if the corporations have to unite, then the elections should be postponed. He said that the motive here is not to postpone the elections. It seems that the BJP is trying to postpone the elections on the pretext of uniting the MCD for fear of defeat.
Kejriwal asked what has the elections got to do with the three corporations holding together. There are 272 wards in all the three municipal corporations in Delhi. Let the election happen, those who are sitting separately now will start sitting together. This will bring in new counselors. If there is one, they will sit together. Postponing elections is not good for the country. The central government has asked to postpone the elections, which is not right. The Election Commission bowed down, this is also not right. There is an appeal to the Prime Minister that the governments will keep on coming. You won’t be there tomorrow. Tomorrow I won’t be there either. Country is important here. By suppressing the Election Commission and canceling the elections, it becomes weak. This weakens the country. Together we have to strengthen the country.
Why did the election commissioner accept the threat or the greed?
During this, Arvind Kejriwal also targeted the State Election Commissioner. He said that I do not know why he agreed to postpone the election within an hour. Was the state election commissioner pressurized or threatened with income tax and ED action? Is this the reason why he agreed to postpone the election within an hour? His term is coming to an end. Has he been given the lure of any other post at the end of his term? I want to tell the commissioner of my State Election Commission that if we do this, only democracy will not survive.
