With the introduction of this rule, from now on for old vehicles, 8 times more registration renewal fee will have to be paid.

As per the existing policy, the registration fee for motorcycles which is currently around Rs 300 will increase to Rs 1,000.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is working towards gradually phased out the old vehicles. They are also looking at implementing a vehicle scrap policy to increase sales of all types of vehicles. Under which customers are being encouraged to scrap their old vehicles. The policy will debar commercial vehicles over 15 years and passenger vehicles over 20 years old if they do not pass fitness and emissions tests.

Let us tell you that under the current policy, the registration fee for motorcycles, which is currently around Rs 300, will increase to Rs 1,000. Whereas the current rate of obtaining fitness renewal certificate for a bus or truck above 15 years, which is currently Rs 1,500, will be Rs 12,500. In addition, any delay in renewal of private vehicle registration will cost Rs 300 per month and Rs 500 for commercial vehicles. Delay in renewal of fitness certificate of commercial vehicles will attract a fine of Rs 50 per day.

Let us tell you that 10 years old diesel vehicles and 15 years old petrol vehicles are already banned in and around Delhi. The hike in registration and fitness certificate renewal fees is aimed at deterring people from keeping their old vehicles. Let us tell you, private vehicle owners have to get fitness renewal every 5 years after the vehicle has completed 15 years. Similarly, fitness certificate has to be renewed every year after completion of 8 years of commercial vehicle. Apart from this, fees have also been fixed for manual and automatic fitness test of vehicles.
