In the year 1991, Ismail and Lachanna worked in Saudi Arabia. During this time they became friends. Both lived together for five years. According to NDTV, during this time, when Ismail needed something, he borrowed 120 Saudi Riyals from Lachanna. At that time the value of 120 Saudi Riyal was approximately equal to 1000 Indian Rupees. Ismail said that he would repay them as soon as he had the money. But soon after this Lachanna returned to India. At that time there were no social media and mobile phones. Therefore both of them lost contact.

Although the amount of Rs 1000 was not very big, Ismail did not forget it. Recently he decided to repay the money he had borrowed from his friend. But it was not that easy. He had no way of contacting Lachanna. Ismail only remembered that Lachanna’s house was in Dharampuri in Jagtial district of Telangana. With just this memory, he left his home in Kerala. He searched about this place online. After reaching there he started asking the local people about Lachanna. At last he managed to reach his friend’s house.

On reaching Lachanna’s house, Ismail handed over the borrowed amount to his family. Ismail gave Rs 25,000 including interest. When Ismail arrived, Lachanna was working in the Gulf country. The family members got him talking on WhatsApp call. Lachanna said he was surprised when Ismail returned him Rs 25,000, whereas he had given him a loan of only 120 Saudi Riyals 35 years ago. Describing Ismail as an honest and good-hearted man, he said that this sentiment reflects the strength of their friendship. He also thanked him for keeping his promise after so many years.

Lachanna told that both of us lived in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia. In the evening we would go to his room, cook food and eat together. This is how our friendship progressed. Later I gave him 120 riyals. He further said that it has been almost 35 years since I gave him money. I don’t know how he calculated those 120 riyals to amount to Rs 25,000. He is a very honest and good man. That’s why they gave me more money. It’s just a symbol of our friendship.
Lachanna further said that at that time, 120 Riyal was equivalent to approximately Rs 1,000. If we had sent 120 riyals through the bank in 1991, we would have received about Rs 1,000 in India. Since several years have passed, I think he may have added interest before returning it to me, but I’m not sure. I am grateful to him for returning the money.
