US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to guarantee Qatar’s safety. This executive order stated that if there is an armed attack on Qatar, the US will take “all legal and appropriate steps”. It also includes diplomatic, economic and military steps when needed.
This step is unusual between the US and Qatar, as Qatar used to get such a security guarantee till now despite being the main non-NATO allies. The order came three weeks later when Israel attacked Hamas’s leaders in Qatar. Qatar’s Prime Minister called it “state terrorism”.
Under this order, if Qatar is attacked, the US will take steps to protect it and its interests and restore peace. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the move and described it as strengthening the defense relations between the two countries.
Headlines
Balance with Israel:
Trump allowed a phone call between Qatar and Israel during the White House tour of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. In this call, Netanyahu expressed “deep regret” for the attack on Qatar. Qatar always demanded forgiveness for this attack.
NATO-like security for non-NATO colleague:
Qatar became the chief non-Nato ally of America in 2022. It also includes the Al-Orde Air Base, the largest American military hub in the Middle East. The order said that American and Qatar military officers would form joint plan to give quick response to any foreign attack.
Trump’s close relationship with Qatar:
Qatar found this security guarantee due to Trump’s investments and his personal relations. Trump visited Qatar in May and made $ 1.2 trillion economic agreements. Qatar’s Royal Family also gave him a luxury jet of $ 400 million.
Not legally binding:
This order is issued without the approval of the US Senate, so it is possible to replace or cancel it by the next president.
Some Republic leaders have objected to this order, as they have been accusing Qatar of having human rights violations and relationships with terrorist groups.
