Considering the security situation in the Middle East, the Australian government has taken a big step. Australia has given the option to the families of its government officials posted in Jordan, Qatar and United Arab Emirates (UAE) that they can return now if they wish. This decision has been taken as a precaution because the environment in the area can change at any time and security is of utmost importance.
What is the order for which countries?
The Australian Government has made it clear that this is “Voluntary Departure” i.e. freedom to go as per one’s own wish. This rule will be applicable in Jordan, Qatar and UAE. On the other hand, the families of the staff present in Israel and Lebanon have been given strict orders to leave the country immediately (Mandatory Departure).
It is a matter of relief that despite the choice of families to go, the Australian Embassies in Amman, Doha and Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai will remain open for the time being. Work will continue as normal, but security is being closely monitored.
What is the advice for common people and travelers?
The government has now increased the travel advisory to ‘Level 2’ for Jordan and UAE as well as Qatar. This means that people living or visiting there now need to be more careful. DFAT has warned that if the situation worsens, flights may stop suddenly.
Common citizens have been advised to use commercial flights immediately if they want to leave the place. Currently, no evacuation flight is being run by the government for the general public. Travelers should also check their insurance policy to see if it covers war or conflict situations.
