Amidst the continuously worsening situation in the Middle East, the Australian government has taken a tough decision. Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong informed on 12 March 2026 that non-essential diplomats and their families are being recalled from Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to Al Jazeera English report, this protective step has been taken due to the ongoing tension and missile attacks in the region.
Embassy closed and new travel advisory for citizens
The Australian Government’s Smartraveller service has issued a ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory for those traveling to Israel, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon and Qatar. Australia’s embassies in Tel Aviv (Israel), Abu Dhabi and Dubai have been physically closed from 11 March 2026. However, some essential officials will still remain there to provide essential consular services to the citizens present there. The government has opened a 24/7 crisis center for its citizens living there and has advised them to evacuate safely as soon as possible through available commercial flights.
Impact on flights and current situation in the Middle East
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that the threat of Iranian attacks and drone strikes has increased, due to which tension may intensify in the future. According to DFAT, more than 3,200 Australian citizens have been brought back safely on 23 commercial flights so far. This situation is also troubling for expatriates from other countries living in Gulf countries and those who travel frequently. There have been reports of some damage due to drone activity at Kuwait International Airport, and debris has also fallen on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai. Apart from this, as a precautionary measure, Citibank in UAE has decided to keep some of its branches closed till March 14, 2026.
