Bangladesh Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus said that his interim government would hand over the power to the elected government after the general election in February next year.
The government news agency BSS quoted Younis as saying, “We are now ready for another change in our political history … The country has become largely stable and ready for elections. Therefore, we announce elections in the first fortnight of February 2026. An elected government will replace the interim government. ”
He made this comment while addressing a three -day international conference titled “Dialogue of stakeholders: Complaint on Rohingya Status” in Cox Bazaar.
Yunus, while referring to the Sheikh Hasina rule, said, “We are an important stage in our political history. A year ago, we passed through a fierce massacre. Then, through public rebellion led by students, it was possible to liberate the country from fascist rule.
Hasina had to leave power after the students’ agitation on August 5, 2024. The former Prime Minister is being prosecuted in his absence in the International Crime Tribunal on several allegations.
