Belgium changed its decision, now Embassy in Kuwait will not be closed for one year

The Belgian government has postponed for a year its plan to close its embassy in Kuwait. This decision has been taken on 11 February 2026. The Deputy Prime Minister of Belgium said that he wants to deepen his relations with Kuwait. Earlier news had come that the Embassy would be closed forever in the summer of 2026, due to which there was concern among the people living there.

Why was the plan to close the embassy changed?

Belgium said in November 2025 that it would close its embassy in Kuwait to reduce its expenses and transform its diplomatic network. But now Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said on social media that it has been put on hold for a year. Kuwaiti officials had earlier expressed strong opposition to this closure plan, after which this new decision has come to light.

Talks between the ministers of the two countries

The issue was discussed between Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Al-Jaber and Belgian Minister Maxime Prévot. Kuwait wanted the embassy to remain open so that work could continue smoothly between the two countries. With this decision, both the countries will now get time to increase mutual cooperation and Belgium will now work on exploring new opportunities with Kuwait.
