Cover Story/Jeffrey Epstein: Mirror of a Dark World

A child sex offender, a man who ran a mansion for the influential, the rich, etc., a man who ensnared many powerful people around the world, a manipulator of policies, or what was Epstein and what was he like, how vast was his network, how did he create this system?

On March 8, 2017, a dialogue on form and form (tangible-intangible) began with Indian-American Deepak Chopra, known for his advocacy of alternative medicine, and Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier and convicted criminal in a sexual assault case. In one email, Epstein asks, “Does the cell have any form? Does the cell have consciousness? Does it have feelings? Does it do anything?” Along with these deep scientific and philosophical questions, there also comes a small curiosity, “Can you find an Israeli beauty for me? :)”

Chopra’s answer was interesting, “Cell is a product of the human mind. There is no such thing! The universe is an imagination of the human mind. Nothing like that.” It meant that neither the cell nor the universe were real; They are in the human imagination. Then, perhaps in response to the question whether cells have consciousness, Chopra writes, “Pretty girls are conscious when they scream.”

“Thank God,” Epstein responded. Chopra opened up a bit more: “God is imaginary, beautiful girls are real.” The conversation was going exactly where both of them wanted to take it. “So, when the girl screams, ‘Oh my God’?” Epstein asked. Chopra replied, “That is divine consciousness.” Epstein immediately said, “Oh, I thought she was telling me.” Chopra wrote, “Because you are God in your own realm.” The bottom line is that sex, especially with hot girls, is real.

This conversation took place when Epstein was again in the headlines due to new court cases of sex crimes. Especially for opening a front against Epstein orOne of the victims, Virginia Giuffre, again brought allegations of sexual exploitation of minors to court in 2015.

Epstein was sentenced to 13 months in prison during 2008-09. Then, with the connivance of the authorities, he got the case of forcing a minor girl into prostitution lightened. However, everyone knew that his lust for sex with minors was intense. Now Donald Trump, who has become President again, had said in 2002, “He also likes beautiful women and I also like younger women.” But these discussions subsided after Epstein came out of jail. Then in 2015, Giuffre’s efforts made headlines. After that, in January 2017, Sarah Ransom approached the court and names like Britain’s Prince Andrew were also among the accused.

All these were in the media headlines. But this did not make much difference to Chopra. His conversations with Epstein about “girls” continued. The federal investigation was reopened in late 2018 following new investigative reports in the media. Calls for action against Epstein also intensified. On February 23, 2019, Epstein asked the renowned linguist Noam Chomsky, who was taking financial advice from him, for advice on dealing with the “sad press” in an email.

Courage: Investigative Journalist Carol Cadwalader

Epstein wrote that the media coverage was “getting out of control” and asked Chomsky whether he should have someone write a newspaper op-ed in his defense because “mobs are violent!” Chomsky seemed to express some sympathy towards him. Chomsky advised him to ignore everything. He wrote, “Many are just publicity seekers or crazy people who are impossible to answer. After all, how do you prove that you are not a neo-Nazi who wants to kill Jews, or a rapist, or whatever the accusation is?” At that time #MeToo campaign was also strong. Chomsky wrote that “hysteria has arisen” over the mistreatment of women, “to such an extent that even questioning an allegation has become a crime akin to murder.”

This was Epstein’s dragnet, with which he used to trap politicians, rich people or cultural-intellectual personalities and helped them get out of many types of moral and immoral traps.

Epstein was found hanging from the ceiling of a New York prison cell on August 10, 2019, making his death a mystery. The government declared it a suicide. Many people including his brother called it murder. He was 66 years old then.

Millionaire serial rapist Epstein was not born in a rich family. He grew up in a working-class neighborhood of Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Her Jewish immigrant father worked as a janitor for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. Epstein dropped out of college, yet found a job teaching science and mathematics at the Dalton School, an elite private school in New York City, in 1973–74.

Then, in 1976, a chance meeting with a student’s father opened the door to Wall Street for him. There he got a job as an account officer in the then famous investment firm Bear Stearns. After some time, he was caught submitting fake degrees from two colleges, but he was not punished because he had a relationship with his supervisor’s daughter. In 1980, he had to resign from Bear Stearns after a dispute over a loan he had given to a friend to buy shares. By then he owned a house in his hometown and another house in Manhattan. He was moving to Palm Beach, Florida with the intention of buying an apartment.

After leaving Bear Stearns he never held a full-time job. He started brokering in the stock market. He also worked as a “financial bounty hunter” for the US government. During that time he used to report cases like money laundering to the authorities and get rewards in return. By the beginning of the 1990s, his name started getting linked to many controversies. After the closure of Towers Financial Corporation, the largest Ponzi scheme in the US at the time, its promoter called Epstein a “technical fraud” of the scheme. Epstein was associated with the company as a consultant between 1987 and 1989.

By then, Epstein had found a match in Ghislaine Maxwell, who was eight years his junior. A British socialite, Maxwell had access to influential people in London and New York. Her father, the disgraced but powerful British media mogul Robert Maxwell, was friends with the Queen, and had great influence in Britain. Maxwell first came to New York in 1991, and settled in New York following the mysterious death of her father later that year.

Maxwell was 30 when she met Epstein. She was older than the girls Epstein liked. Nevertheless, they bonded well with each other. It became a stepping stone for Epstein into the influential community. That is, Epstein got an entry pass to the luxurious ballroom and private salon, where diplomats, politicians and royal families used to come and go. As early as 1996, Epstein owned a private plane called the ‘Lolita Express’ (he borrowed the name from Vladimir Nabokov’s famous novel), which flew minors to Caribbean islands for wild parties. By 2002, he had become so rich and powerful that he could fly former US President Bill Clinton, actors Kevin Spacey and Chris Tucker to Africa in his exclusive Boeing 727. In this way the world’s attention was drawn towards this mysterious financier.

The most important thing that his victims and associates said about his power was his ability to bluff and blackmail. He was adept at overcoming any situation. Epstein became known as the “fraud master” when allegations against him began to surface in the mid-2000s.

When she wished someone a happy birthday on July 27, 2013, he responded by calling him a “liar, evildoer, manipulator, old man” and instructed him to stay away from him. On March 1, 2016, another woman wrote to him: “I’m not a manipulator, I’m a truth teller.” Epstein wanted him to give him “massages” and supply “girls” in exchange for money. A lawyer had enjoyed the “Nabokov-Lolita Experience” with Epstein a few years ago. She praised Epstein in 2014 as “a wonderful psychologist and a dangerous manipulator.” He had also supplied girls to Epstein.

According to the late Virginia Giuffre, who became a victim of Epstein and Prince Andrew’s lust, cameras were also installed in the toilet of Epstein’s New York home. During parties, Epstein was always collecting evidence. He was willing to resort to blackmail so that his own crimes would never come to light or to ensure that his work as a power broker continued without any fault.

To build his reputation, especially after his first prison sentence, Epstein funded educational, scientific research, and arts institutions and events. In a documentary, one of his old colleagues says that he used to bring big checks to academic functions. This funding was a way to trap underage girls. For example, Anne Farmer was lured by Maxwell with the promise that Epstein would pay for her studies abroad. He spent hundreds of dollars on girls whom Maxwell ‘bought’ for massages.

Maxwell, who is serving a jail sentence since 2021, not only collected girls for him, but also participated in some of his sexual activities.

“Epstein was a sociopath who meticulously organized his vices,” said a former employee at Little St. James Island, also known as ‘Orgy Island.’

He could do this because he had powerful people with him, whom he included in his game. In this way its scope continued to expand. In an email sent on June 17, 2013, to Olivier Colom, an adviser to former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Epstein said that some girls “are like prawns, you throw away the head and keep the body.” Colom praised Epstein.

Epstein once said, “I’m very comfortable with myself. I’m basically free to do anything.” And his freedom meant slavery to others.

Outlook sent some of Epstein’s available video clips to Delhi-based clinical psychologist Megha Kalra for analysis. She explains that his way of talking about his actions is to normalize his crimes. This gives an idea of his bluffing power.

Kalra says, “His personality is such that he gets a thrill from his work and enjoys it. It never occurs to him to do anything wrong.” Epstein is said to have planned to use his New Mexico ranch to impregnate women with his sperm, in the hope that 20 women at a time would give birth to his children. Allegations of the Zorro Ranch “baby farm” have been surfacing since 2019. This plan was prepared with a scientist in his New York mansion.

Ayesha Kidwai, a linguist at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, reviewed the language of some of Epstein’s emails. “He only wanted baby girls and minor girls because that’s what he wanted. He didn’t just want sex, but power and control and status,” says Kidwai. She says the media and politicians are calling his victims “little women” even though they were minors. She needed children because they could not shock, attack, create a scene or hurt her power status in any way.”

Some people considered his death as the last way to escape from his clutches. He did not get bail until the trial was over. The evidence kept increasing. He was captured, his freedom was taken away. Sigrid McCauley, a lawyer for many of Epstein’s victims, said, “He died the way he lived. He lived his life without any accountability and his death was just a final ‘fuck you’ to his victims.” However, his last show of ‘cheating’ mostly failed. Two days before the alleged suicide, he transferred all his wealth to a trust, so that his money would not go to the victims as compensation. As it turns out, none of the beneficiaries she named in her will will get any money.
