A major accident has occurred in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In Rubaya area here, a mine collapsed due to landslide after heavy rains, in which more than 200 people lost their lives. The dead also included mine workers, women and children. The administration said that relief and rescue work is still going on but due to bad weather it is facing a lot of problems.

This tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 in North Kivu province. According to officials, due to continuous rains the soil got wet and slipped and the mine collapsed. As of Saturday, January 31, the death toll has increased to 227. About 20 people have been injured and have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. Many more people are still feared buried under the debris.
Who had control over the mine and what action was taken now?
The area where this accident occurred is under the control of the M23 rebel group. This mine is known for extracting Coltan, which is used in making mobiles and electronics. After the accident, rebel governor Erasto Bahati Musanga visited the spot. Keeping security in mind, the administration has completely stopped the digging work there and has ordered the people living near the mine to move to safe places.
