After US President Donald Trump threatened to ‘take over’ Greenland, European countries have started increasing their military presence in the Arctic region. Under ‘Operation Arctic Endurance’, which started under the leadership of Denmark on 15 and 16 January 2026, soldiers from countries like Germany, France, Britain and Netherlands have reached Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. This mission is not only a military exercise, but it is also being seen as a strategic message against America’s intentions.
1. Beginning of Operation Arctic Endurance
Denmark has started this operation in collaboration with its NATO allies. Its main objective is to increase military presence in the Arctic region. In this rapid mission that took place on 15 and 16 January, small military contingents from European countries landed in Greenland by plane. This mission is proof that Europe can rapidly deploy forces for its own security if needed, even without NATO command. At present, US and Canadian soldiers are not involved in this mission.
2. Details of troops deployed in Greenland
Different countries have sent their special military contingents for this initial two-day mission. The table given below tells how many soldiers and officers from which country have become part of this mission:
Country Name Number of soldiers/officers Specifications France 15 Mountain Specialists Germany 13 soldiers Sweden 3 officers Netherlands 2 soldiers Norway 2 soldiers Britain 1 soldier
3. What is the main objective of this mission?
The main task of these soldiers who reached Greenland is to take stock of the difficult Arctic conditions there. These teams will plan future major military exercises and strengthen the security arrangements there. Denmark wants to work with its allies to protect the infrastructure there and provide help to local authorities. Additionally, the mission also aims to establish a more permanent presence there through troop rotation in the future.
4. Preparation to deal with America, China and Russia
This deployment comes at a time when geopolitical tensions regarding the Arctic region are at their peak. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has clearly stated that “the American ambition to occupy Greenland is still intact” and efforts are underway to stop it. At the same time, this mission has also been prepared to counter the challenges from Russia and China. Both China and Russia are increasing their activities in the Arctic region, which has increased the concern of Western countries.
5. European solidarity and planning for the future
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius have described the mission as a symbol of unity against the threat of any kind of “occupation”. Although experts believe that the US is less likely to use military force and that it can increase its influence through economic pressure or investment, European leaders do not want to take any risks. This mission is an attempt to show the world that the whole of Europe is united for the protection of Greenland.
